Burn Permits

Open Burning is allowed by permit by Brown County Resolution 2025-09.

A burn permit must be obtained from Brown County Sheriff's Dispatch at 785-742-7125.

The person initiating the burn must notify Brown County Dispatch two hours before starting the burn.

Person initiating the burn shall notify Brown County Dispatch when the burn is extinguished.

Per Kansas Statute K.A.R. 28-19-645, no hay bales may be burned.

No Burning When

• The National Weather Service Rangeland Fire Index for Brown County is High, Very High, or Extreme.
• The sustained wind speed meets or exceeds 20 mph. Please view the Wind Speed. The nearest NOAA station displayed will be used for wind speed.
• Reasonable precautions for open burning
